Charles W. Massie Jr., 86, of Fairmount, died Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at Community-General Hospital. Born in Lewisville, Ohio on Monday, January 17, 1921, he was the son of Charles William Massie and Shelly Eldora Johnson Massie. He was raised in Conneacut, Ohio until moving to Buffalo in 1947.Chuck lived in Syracuse since 1957. He was chief engineer in the Merchant Marines and attended Syracuse University. He was employed by Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Co. for 36 years. Chuck served on the Camillus Zoning Board of Appeals and wrote the codes on high pressure vessels for new training inspectors.In 1972 he was appointed by the Town of Camillus to serve on a non-partisan committee to assist Dr. David Beebe with the formation of the Erie Canal Restoration Committee. Active in a variety of construction projects with the Erie Canal, he was instrumental in the building of bridges and two boathouses. He also helped with the physical work in building the Sims Store from 1976-1977.Chuck was a volunteer for more than 20 years at Community-General Hospital in the pharmacy. He was a member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church. He was also a former coach and referee for Little League and an avid trap shooter with the Camillus Sportsmen's Club. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, the former Dorothy Elmer; son, Charles Massie III of Fairmount; daughters and son-in-law, Susan and Douglas Rosenthal of Camillus and Sharon Sutliff of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Stephanie, Matthew, Kyle and Bradley; great-grandchildren, Logan, Landon and Juliet. His son, Mark David Massie, died in 1992. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, January 7, 2008 at St. Michael's Lutheran Church, 5108 W. Genesee St., Camillus with Rev. Janet Fechner-Pelletier officiating. Friends may call Sunday, January 6, 2008 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Warners. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Parkinson's Disease Foundation, c/o Upstate Medical University Foundation, 750 E. Adams St., Syracuse, NY 13210.
