Obituary for Daniel F. Rubado

Daniel F. Rubado, 69, of Syracuse, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2019 at University Hospital. A lifetime resident of the Syracuse area, he worked in the radio industry for 32 years. In 1966, at only 15 years old, Dan Elliott became the lead singer for The Monterays and opened a show for The Beach Boys, the #1 group in the world at that time. In 1968, The Monterays song, "If Wishes Were Horses" became one of the best-selling singles in Central New York history. From 1973 to 1974, Dan toured Asia, Europe, Australia and the United States with The Glenn Miller Orchestra. In 1974, Dan Elliott took Dion's place as lead singer for The Belmonts and began a long relationship touring all over the world including numerous shows at Madison Square Garden. In 1976, he appeared in Syracuse as the lead singer for The Belmonts for a two-week stint at The Top of the Inn, the #1 show place in CNY at that time. Shows were sold out every night. In 1981, he appeared on National TV on “Solid Gold,” “The Mike Douglas Show” and the motion picture, “The Junkman,” where he recorded six songs for the movie. Dan Elliott and The Monterays opened for Ray Charles at Gordy’s Double Play in Northern New York in 1990. In 1996, Dan Elliott and The Monterays were inducted into The Sammys Hall of Fame and in 2001 he was inducted into The Doo-Wopp Hall of Fame of America at Symphony Hall in Boston, MA. In 2002, Dan Elliott performed at the Syracuse Jazz Fest. In 2006, he performed with The Belmonts at the Syracuse Nationals and appeared at the New York State Fair with The Monterays. In 2007, Dan Elliott and The Monterays opened the Sammy Awards Show at The Taste of Syracuse.

Dan was predeceased by his father, John “Jack” Abert; and brother, Jack Abert.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Carolyn Tucker-Rubado; son, Daniel Rubado Jr.; stepsons, Ryan, Scott and Colin Tucker; mother, Concetta Abert; sister-in-law, Anita Abert and nephews, Tim and Dan Abert.

Relatives and friends may call Thursday, June 27 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.

Services will follow at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be private.
