Doris L. Kohls

Doris L. Kohls, 80, of Westvale, died Thursday, April 3, 2008 at St. Camillus Health & Rehabilitation Center. Born in Rochester on January 15, 1928, she was the daughter of Carl Julius Kohls and Antoinette Frances Sanger. A graduate of St. Boniface Grammar School and Our Lady of Mercy High School in Rochester, she was a secretary at Sibley, Lindsay & Curr Co. for more than 41 years, retiring in 1988 and moving to Syracuse in 1992. Doris studied piano for nine years with Sister Pauline, the music teacher at St. Boniface. A member of St. Anne's Parish until 1992, she sang alto in the adult choir for many years, and was also a longtime member of The Treble Clefs, a women's choral group in Rochester. After retirement, she joined one of the first resurrection choirs in Rochester, and upon coming to Syracuse, immediately joined St. Ann's Adult and Resurrection Choirs as well as Holy Family Resurrection Choir. She also did volunteer work at public libraries in Rochester, and then at the Spiritual Renewal Center in Syracuse. Doris was one of the few Catholic members of the local chapter of Church Women United. Following her parents and Uncle Herbert L. Sanger, she was an avid gardener. She also enjoyed traveling around Upstate New York, particularly to the Ithaca area, including the Cornell campus and several nearby state parks. Doris was a member of the Landmark Society of Western New York, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Rochester Museum & Science Center, Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, and the Museum of Science & Technology, Friends of the Liverpool Public Library, public radio stations WCNY and WRVO, and Civic Morning Musicals in Syracuse. She also supported the Hope Appeal, the Norbertine Fathers, Society of the Divine Savior, and Franciscan Friars of the Atonement-Graymoor, as well as Sarah House, Special Olympics New York, and especially, the Food Bank of Central New York. Most important to her was making regular contributions to church food pantries and the Rescue Mission. Surviving is her brother, Carl W. Kohls of Westvale. Services will be at noon on Monday, April 7, 2008 at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus with Deacon Nick Alvaro officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2008 in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Rochester. Contributions may be made to Holy Family Church Food Pantry, 127 Chapel Dr., Syracuse, NY 13219.
