Dr. Edward F. Murphy, 88, of Syracuse and formerly of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, died Monday, February 26, 2007 at his home. Born in Pittsfield on Thursday, January 16, 1919, he lived there for 18 years. He spent most of his life in Winooski, Vermont until moving to Syracuse in 1997. A US paratrooper during World War II, Ed was a graduate of St. Michael's College in Colchester, Vermont and earned a Doctorate at the University of Ottawa. Ed was a professor of English at St. Michael's College for 51 years, retiring at age 73. He was a communicant of Holy Family Church in Syracuse and a former communicant of St. Stephen's Church in Winooski. Ed's wife, the former Marie Reeves, died in 2000 and his daughter, Linda Murphy, died in 1984. Surviving are his daughters, Frances Rork of Lancaster, Ohio, Catherine Arbital and Mary Stash both of Camillus; sons, Edward Murphy II of Winooski, Vermont and David Murphy of Voorhees, New Jersey; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandson. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 2, 2007 at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus and at 10:30 a.m. in Holy Family Church where a funeral Mass will be celebrated. Friends may call Thursday, March 1, 2007 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Spring burial will be in Merrill Cemetery, Colchester, Vermont.
