Frederick G. 'Doc' Schwartz

Frederick “Doc” Schwartz, 81, of Camillus and Grindstone Island, New York, passed away Thursday, March 12, 2009 at University Hospital. Born in Niagara Falls on Monday, January 30, 1928, he was the son of George William Schwartz and Mabel Pletcher Schwartz. He graduated from high school in 1945 with honors. He served from 1946-1949 in World War II in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. in the Alaska Theatre, where he participated in over 600 air rescue jumps. He was also a technician in several departments of the U.S. Army Hospital near Anchorage. A 1952 Syracuse University BA honors graduate and a 1962 Northwestern University FMA graduate, Doc worked for the Syracuse Newspapers and for 35 years in local financial institutions starting with Syracuse Savings Bank, which merged into the Norstar Bank, then Fleet Financial Group, retiring in 1991 as sr. vice-president of Public & Community Relations. Doc was a past-president and/or board member of over 20 area and NYS organizations including: NYS Savings Bank Marketing Firm, honored as 1976 Marketing Man-of-the-Year; CNY Sales & Marketing Executives, recipient of the 1987 Crystal Ball Award; OCM/BOCES, 1988 Outstanding Leader in Education Award; Kiwanis; HOPE; WCNY; Syracuse Advertising Club, receiving its 1962 Silver Baton Award; Westerlea, Inc.; Jr. Achievement; founding member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and 40-year treasurer of the Grindstone Island summer church on the St. Lawrence River. Doc was also an adjunct professor at Onondaga Community College, guest lecturer at Syracuse University and national speaker on Marketing & Management for the AMA, resulting in a published series of articles on these subjects. He was listed in Who’s Who in American Advertising. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, the former Phyllis Hotchkiss; son, Mark (Dreamer) Schwartz of Redwood, New York; daughters, Donni (Bruce) Roth of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Jodi Schwartz (Kathryn Collier) of San Francisco, California; grandsons, Jonah (Laura), Benjamin, Nathan and Eli; brother, Daniel of Elbridge; sister-in-law, Alice (Lee) Hidy of Camillus; two nieces and three nephews. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, April 19, 2009 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. The family will greet friends in the parish hall at a luncheon following the service.
