Jane Sammons Rotella Coyle, 85, of Camillus and Palm City, Florida passed away on Tuesday, February 12, 2008 in Palm City. She graduated from North High School and attended Cortland State University.Born in Syracuse on Sunday, May 28, 1922, she was the daughter of Frances Pooler Sammons and Benjamin Sammons. Jane will be remembered for breaking new ground for women. She was one of the first outstanding female athletes in the Syracuse area, playing professional softball as a teenager. In the 1960's Jane enjoyed a successful career as a real estate developer, building numerous homes in central New York. In 1966 she continued her business ventures by founding and building the West Hill Golf & Country Club in Camillus. As a hands-on owner/operator, she could be found grooming the fairways, planting trees, running the pro-shop, and planning the perfection of wedding receptions. Her determination and strong will to succeed has and always will be an inspiration to her children and family. In 1984 Jane retired to Florida with her husband, Dennis. She then had the time to take up the game of golf with her husband's encouragement. She enjoyed playing golf with her family and friends at West Hill and Martin Downs in Palm City. She enjoyed antiquing with Dennis, and she amassed the largest advertising thermometer collection in the country to be known by every collectable dealer in the northeast. In 1966 Jane sponsored Nguyen Ngoc Vui as a foreign exchange student. Later she was instrumental in bringing Vui and his entire family to the United States as permanent residents during the South Vietnamese evacuation of 1975. Jane is predeceased by her husband, of 33 years, Dennis M. Coyle, and four brothers, Jack, Rev. William, Robert and Fritz Sammons. Surviving are her nine children, Joanne Rotella of Atlanta, Georgia, John, Jock (Mary Lou), Jill, Jeff (Hollis), Jed (Laurie), Jay (Perri) Rotella, and Julie (William) Moore, all of the Syracuse-Camillus area, and Jean (Vince) Turner of Palm City, Florida; 16 grandchildren, Julie, Shawn, Will, Brice, Jayson, Jamie, Kiel, Michael, Greg, Daniel, Ben, Samantha, Jill, Eden, Diane and Joelle; five great-grandchildren and 16 nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be private. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, February 22, 2008 at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
