John T. Carleton

John T. Carleton, 86, of Haines City, Florida, passed away on Saturday, July 22, 2006. Born in Milton, Massachusetts on Saturday, July 17, 1920, he was the son of John Harvey Carleton and Frances Dugan. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from MIT and a Master's of Science in Mechanical Engineering from MIT. He also completed postgraduate work at Annapolis. As a young boy, John was an accomplished sailor and boat builder in the Boston area. During World War II, John served in the Navy, stationed in Rhode Island, disarming enemy torpedoes. After the war, he moved to Washington State and worked on The Manhattan Project where he met his wife, Patricia Flanagan. Leaving Washington State in 1950, he moved east to work as a senior engineer at DuPont Co. During his career, he was granted numerous patents in high vacuum metallurgy and Tedlar. John had an insatiable and unending appetite for learning. Surviving are his loving wife of 59 years, Patricia; sons and daughters-in-law John and MaryAnn Carleton of Delaware, Ohio, Bill and Carol Carleton of Santa Barbara, California and Joe and Leah Carleton of Hilliard, Ohio; daughters and sons-in-law, Claire and Tim O'Haver of Upper Arlington, Ohio, Pam and Michael Ciarla of Camillus and 11 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Elizabeth (Jay) deWolf in 2001. A Memorial Service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 2, 2006 in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Warners, New York.
