Marie G. McMahon

Marie Gettino McMahon, 83, of Westvale, died Sunday, May 10, 2015 at Menorah Park Nursing Home. She was born in Solvay on January 9, 1932. Marie McMahon was a 1950 graduate of Solvay High School. She earned a B.S. degree in 1954 from Le Moyne College. Marie McMahon later earned a Master of Social Work (MSW) from Syracuse University in 1972. After she graduated from Le Moyne College, she began her social work career by working as a caseworker for the Onondaga County Department of Social Services where she met her future husband, Thomas J. McMahon Jr. They were married in 1956 and lived in Westvale.  She was a communicant of Holy Family Church and was involved in many church activities.  Marie McMahon’s husband, Thomas, predeceased her in 2006. She worked with troubled youths at the Hillbrook Detention Center in the 1960s. In 1989, she was awarded the Le Moyne College Distinguished Alumni Award for her tradition of service to the community throughout her personal and professional life.  She retired in 1995 as the program director of Brick House-Willows Alcohol Rehabilitation Center.  She was past president of the Central New York Chapter of the New York Federation of Alcohol Counselors (NYFAC). She is survived by her four sons: Timothy C. McMahon (Rebecca) an electrical engineer for IBM in Burlington, Vermont; Stephen T. McMahon, an attorney in Syracuse, New York; Robert J. McMahon (Rosemarie) also an electrical engineer for IBM in Burlington, Vermont; John T. McMahon (Kathleen), a premium auditor for PMA insurance in Syracuse, New York. Marie McMahon is also survived by four granddaughters: Nora McMahon, Sarah McMahon, Kathleen McMahon and Natalie McMahon and one grandson, James McMahon. All her grandchildren reside in Vermont. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, May 15 at 10:30 a.m. in Holy Family Church. Marie will be laid to rest in Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Le Moyne College Annual Fund in her honor.
