Obituary for Robert "Bob" N. Tortorella

Robert “Bob” N. Tortorella, 84, of Camillus, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2019, surrounded by family and friends. The son of Francesco and Nicoletta Tortorella, both Italian immigrants, he was the youngest of ten children and the first to graduate college. Growing up in Malden, Massachusetts, Robert overcame a bout with polio and then became a star athlete for the prolific Malden High School football team. With his stocky build, he was slated for the offensive line yet was the starting quarterback by the end of his junior year. Following high school with the help of his coach, Robert attended Cheshire Academy and went on to attend and play football at Holy Cross on a scholarship. Having graduated officer training school during the summer prior to his senior year, he entered the Marines and as first lieutenant was assigned to stand guard with his platoon at the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy. Robert became a boxer in the Marine Corps while simultaneously continuing his football career while stationed at Quantico. Following his service to his country, he took a sales job with A.W. Chesterton Company where he became a top contributor to the company’s sales and a cherished mentor and friend to countless people associated with the company. Robert moved his young family to Camillus in 1965 for work purposes. As his three sons grew up, he became more and more involved in the community by teaching religious education (he converted to Catholicism in college) and in the early 1970s, pioneering the local youth hockey program by coaching many teams and bringing them to compete in Amsterdam, Sweden and France on two separate occasions. Robert retired from Chesterton in late 1989 and joined his sons in establishing Corrosion Products & Equipment, Inc., which remains a leader in its field. Throughout the heavy travel his work career demanded, dedicating himself to volunteerism and helping others, he cherished and adored his wife of 58 years, Jeanette and always found time to help with homework, play catch and watch his boys’ games.

Robert was predeceased by his wife, Jeannette, in 2016.

Surviving are his sons, Robert of Rochester, Paul (Mary) of Andover, MA and Peter (Sara) of Albany; grandchildren, Jude, Shauna, Brando, Connor and Aidan; great-grandson, Robert Daniel; sisters, Nina and Evelyn; sisters-in-law, Ida Giordano, Flora Vetrano and Gloria Orcione; brother-in-law, Albert Sciarappa; godsons, Jake Healey and Joe Callahan; and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend a thank you to the many friends that showed their love and support during Bob’s stay in hospitals and during recovery at home.

Relatives and friends may call Thursday, August 1 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.

A funeral service will be Friday, August 2 at 10 a.m. in Woodlawn Mausoleum, 800 Grant Blvd., Syracuse.

The family wishes to extend an invitation to join them at Francesca's Cucina, 545 N. Salina St., Syracuse to share some food, fellowship and memories of Bob.

In Robert’s honor, contributions may be made to one’s favorite charity.
