Roger J. Rether, 73, of Camillus, passed away Saturday, May 29, 2010 at University Hospital. Born and raised in Camillus, he was the son of Joseph Charles Rether and Nellie Nowski Rether. He was a master carpenter and built a covered bridge in Brantingham that has been registered with the National Historical Society as a replica of a former bridge in that area. He was an Army veteran and member of Camillus First United Methodist Church. Roger was an earthy outdoorsman who liked nothing better than to canoe, backpack, snowmobile, hunt and fish. An avid hunter, especially in the Adirondacks, he taught hunter safety courses to young and old alike so that they too might come to know the joy of hunting as he did. Roger traveled around the area teaching these important facts to many during his life. His skill as a marksman was his specialty from the U.S. Army and he shared skills gracefully and fully. He had three camps in the Brantingham area, one washed away by a flood, one now his brother’s camp, and the last one he built for himself. Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Michele Rether of Camillus; granddaughters, Ashley and Morgan Rether; brother, Richard; sister, Jane; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 3 at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus with Rev. Marcia Wickert officiating. Relatives and friends may call Wednesday, June 2 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Roger will be laid to rest in Maplewood Cemetery, Camillus. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Camillus First United Methodist Church, 12 Genesee St., Camillus, NY 13031.
