Sophia N. Dimkos

Sophia Dimkos, 91, of Camillus, passed away Saturday at home. Born in Kato Ydrousa, Florina, Greece, she was the daughter of Athanas and Mary Nicolaos. She moved to the U.S. in 1937. Sophia and her husband, Chris, owned the Willis Ave. Market for over 35 years. She previously worked at McCarthy's Restaurant. She was a communicant of St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church, former Sunday school teacher, and member of the Philoptochos Society. Sophia was also past-president of the Daughters of Penelope and vice-president of the Supreme Lodge Women's Auxiliary in the Pan Macedonian Assn. Well-known for her spanakopita, she was chairman of the Pita booth at St. Sophia's Greek Festival for over 35 years. An avid gardener and excellent cook, Sophia was known for her generosity and hospitality and loved spending time with her family and friends. Sophia was predeceased by her sons, Apostolos and Paul Peters; brother, Chris Nicolaos; and sister, Athena Milankov.    Surviving are her husband, Christos Dimkos; daughter, Vicky (Don) Christo of Camillus; sons, Peter (Diane) Peters of Baldwinsville, John Peters and Phillip Dimkos, both of Camillus and Nick Dimkos of Syracuse; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call Wednesday, December 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Trisagion service will be at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 17 in St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church. Sophia will be laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of CNY, 990 Seventh North St., Liverpool, NY 13088 or to St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church, 325 Waring Rd., Syracuse, NY 13224.
