Stephen W. Mayka, 85, of Camillus, died Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at Van Duyn Home & Hospital. Born in Syracuse on Thursday, December 28, 1922, he lived in Westvale for 32 years and Onondaga Hill for 15 years until moving to Camillus in 2000. Steve was a 1940 graduate of Vocational High School and an Army veteran of World War II, having served in China, Burma and India. He was employed by Victory Foods as a meat manager at several stores, including Bridgeport, Jordan, Jamesville, and DeWitt, and retiring from the Tully store in 1985. He was also formerly employed by Gianelli Sausage Co. He was a communicant of St. Josephs Church. Steve was also a member of the Meat Cutter's Union, Happy Hearts Club and the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing and playing with "Best Buddy," his grandson Chris. Steve was predeceased by his parents, Matthew and Marianne Majka; brothers, Walter and Raymond Majka; and sisters, Sophie Orzel, Mary Kasmer, Nellie Piwinski, Jean Romancik and Helene Smith. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, the former Tonya Mullen; children, Stephen A. and Beth Mayka of Evergreen, Colorado, Karen A. and Charles Dennis of Westvale and Philip M. and Cindy Mayka of Camillus; sister, Virginia Grosso of Camillus and special grandson, Christopher P. Mayka of Camillus. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 12, 2008 at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus and at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church where a funeral Mass will be celebrated. Friends may call Wednesday, June 11, 2008 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Warners. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Van Duyn Guild, 5075 W. Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse, NY 13215 or to St. Joseph's Church, 5600 W. Genesee St., Camillus, NY 13031.
