Camillus

Betty (Congdon) Bacon, 95, of Camillus, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home on Wednesday. Born and raised in Ilion, she later moved to Syracuse with her parents. She was a graduate of Valley High School and married George Bacon in 1954. Together, they raised their family in Camillus.

Betty worked as a sales associate at K-Mart for 14 years and, in her younger years, as an Avon representative in the Camillus area. During retirement, she devoted much of her time to volunteering at the Camillus Erie Canal Museum alongside her best friend, Nadine. She was a member of the former West Genesee Hills Baptist Church. Betty was also a drummer in the Glengarry Girls Scottish Pipe Band and remained lifelong friends with her fellow band members.

Betty enjoyed walking, hiking, biking, and visiting her favorite places, including Limekiln Lake and Old Forge, where she shared many special moments with close friends. In recent years, she especially cherished her Friday lunch dates at Bailiwick with her daughter, Kerry, enjoyed visiting with friends there as well, and looked forward to outings to Doug’s Fish Fry with her son, Jon.

Betty was predeceased by her husband, George, in 1998; parents, Forest and Mary (McWhithey) Congdon; and sister, Joanne Hemans.

Surviving are her children, Laurie Meira of Murphys, CA, Kerry (Dane) Morse of Camillus, and Jon and James Bacon of Camillus; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sister, Diana Pratt of Brunswick, ME.

Graveside services will be held at a later date on a sunny, warm day with "blue skies". That is what she would have loved!

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Camillus Erie Canal, 5750, Devoe Rd., Camillus, NY 13031, or to the Imperfect Church (formerly West Genesee Hills Baptist Church), 4947 W. Genesee St., Camillus, NY 13031.
