David Michael Dean, age 67, of Syracuse, passed away on Thursday. He was born on March 29, 1958, and was the beloved son of Dorothy (Warboy) Dean and the late William Dean.
A true master of his craft, David devoted his career to life on the high steel as a union ironworker. He was a proud member of Ironworkers Locals 440, 60, and 33, carrying the strength, loyalty, and brotherhood of the union with him throughout his life. Among his greatest accomplishments was his work in New York City, where he helped build the foundation and skyline of Battery Park City—an achievement he spoke of with deep pride. After retiring, David cherished his longstanding tradition of meeting his union brothers and lifelong friends for breakfast, a time to reconnect, share stories, and enjoy plenty of laughter.
In his later years, David found his true soulmate in his fiancée and devoted companion, Lori Brooks. Lori shared his dreams and supported him unconditionally, bringing immense joy, love, and happiness into his life. Together, they built a life filled with warmth, laughter, and a sense of home that extended to everyone around them.
David was known for his infectious energy, generous heart, and rare ability to make anyone feel welcome. That love extended to the many cats and dogs he cared for over the years, especially his last and dearest canine companion, Baxter. Baxter was his constant sidekick, whether accompanying David on long walks or simply keeping him company at home, and their bond was truly special.
An avid fan of Syracuse University basketball, the NY Yankees, and NASCAR, David was happiest when his home was filled with friends and family for an S.U. watch party or a backyard barbecue. He took great pride in his meticulously maintained yard and landscaping. Famous for his “open-door” policy, David welcomed his children’s friends as if they were his own, earning the affectionate title of “second dad” to many.
David was predeceased by his father, William Dean.
Surviving are his mother, Dorothy (Warboy); beloved fiancée, Lori Brooks; children, David (Jane) Dean, Allison Dean, and Bayleigh Dean; grandson, Damon, of whom he was immensely proud; siblings, Susan (Lew) Seeley, Deborah (Frank) Cullen, Amy (Gary) Landers, Karen (Tom) Belge, and James, along with many extended family members and friends who will deeply miss his spirit.
To celebrate David’s life, relatives and friends are invited to gather on Friday, February 6, 2026, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
A memorial service will follow in the funeral home.
