David Mooney

October 6, 1949 — December 23, 2021

David Michael Mooney, 72, of Syracuse, passed away Thursday at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, surrounded by his family. A U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, he was a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy. He was employed by Mutual of New York for more than 20 years and was a freelance photo-ready artist, known for his work with Coleman’s, the Blarney Stone, O’Dea’s, Bishop Ludden, St. Charles, the Syracuse Irish Festival and countless other organizations. David loved to draw, sculpt, paint, and listen to classic rock. Considered a staple in the Tipp Hill area, he lived there for more than 40 years where he was well-known. An avid camper and woodsman, he enjoyed the Adirondacks and camping with his friends. One of his greatest inspirations in life was J.R.R. Tolkien.

David was predeceased by his parents, David Robert Mooney and Rita Mooney-Shanahan.

Surviving are his siblings, Patrick (Chris) Mooney, Marilyn Mooney, and Kathleen (Timothy) O'Neill; children, David Sean Mooney, Kimberly (Bradford) Sauve, Colleen Mooney and Daniel Mooney; grandchildren, David Connor Mooney, Juliet Sauve, Catherine Evans and Jonathan Sauve; the children’s mother, Barbara Mooney-O’Brien; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may call Wednesday, December 29 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. Face masks are required.

Funeral services will be private. David will be laid to rest at the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, 800 Irving Ave., Syracuse, NY 13210.
