Dominic A. Ficarra, 87, of Camillus, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, surrounded by his loving family.
Born and raised in the Syracuse area, Dominic was a proud graduate of St. John the Baptist High School and went on to earn his associate’s degree from Morrisville State College. He honorably served his country for over 20 years in the Coast Guard Reserves, retiring with the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer.
Dominic dedicated much of his professional life to hard work and service. He was employed by Allied Chemical for 26 years before continuing his career with the Town of Camillus, where he worked for 13 years. Dominic’s commitment to his community extended beyond his professional roles. He proudly served as a Camillus town councilman for 16 years, where he was known for his dedication and leadership.
Dominic was a communicant of Holy Family Church and an active member of the Camillus Elks Lodge and the Camillus Canal Society, organizations through which he contributed to the civic and social life of his community.
Dominic was a man who brought joy to those around him. He had a wonderful sense of humor, made people laugh easily, and was truly a pleasure to be around. He was a beloved Costco member who always enjoyed his trips there, and a familiar face at Home Depot, often stopping in for his morning cup of coffee. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking, could fix just about anything, and was known as a skilled and dependable handyman.
Dominic will be remembered for his lifelong dedication to his country, his community, and his work, as well as for the warmth and laughter he brought into the lives of others. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Dominic was predeceased by his parents, Francesco and Leta Ficarra; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Philip and Sally Lynch; and brother-in-law, Carlton Willey.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Mary; daughters Lynda Ficarra of Camillus and Cynthia (Bruce) Shoener of Verona; granddaughter, Kimberly (Jacob) Lovejoy of Topping, VA; brothers, Anthony (Carole) of Camillus and Frank (Michele) of Chittenango; sister-in-law, Ann Willey of Bridgeport; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his beloved family pets, Meatball and Flower Ediebean.
