Elliot Rodger Petrie

June 16, 2005 — June 3, 2026

Syracuse

Elliot Rodger Petrie, 20, of Syracuse, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday.

Our beloved Elliot has left us too soon. The epitome of "all gas and no brakes," he lived his life to the fullest with a love of adventure and exploration. Elliot thought big, felt deeply, and threw himself into whatever captured his interest with passion, determination, and full force. He approached life with an enthusiasm that was contagious and a generosity that touched everyone around him. Always willing to help others, he gave freely of his time, energy, and heart.

Driven by his competitive nature and love of high school wrestling, Elliot's favorite place to be on most nights was the gym at Emerald City Jiu Jitsu, where he practiced and trained for Jiu Jitsu and MMA competitions alongside his community of brothers on the mat. Under the guidance of his coach, Sam, he found not only a sport he loved but also a brotherhood, a sense of purpose, and a place where he could challenge himself and grow.

Elliot loved fishing and spending time at his grandparents' lake house. He loved to travel and was fortunate to visit the Amazon and the Galápagos Islands, as well as enjoy annual summer excursions to Cape Cod. A lover of animals since childhood, he took multiple trips to Oaxaca, Mexico, where he assisted in veterinary rescue missions, helping both dogs and sea turtles.

Elliot often told us how much he loved his family. The second of six kids, he loved his siblings and would alternate between fierce devotion to them and the playful torment for which brothers are known. A true friend, he could always be counted on for a good time - as his friend Nate says, “There were no bad days with Elliot.” His passing leaves a hole in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to call him family or friend. He will be deeply missed.

Surviving are his parents, Jason and Rebecca of Syracuse; siblings, Ethan, Thalia, Laine, Malcolm, and Silas Petrie, all of Syracuse; maternal grandparents, Rich and Linda Rodger of East Falmouth, MA; paternal grandparents, Chris and Jane Petrie of Grafton, MA; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

To celebrate Elliot’s life, relatives and friends are invited to gather on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at 10 a.m. in the Church of St. Michael & St. Peter, 4781 W. Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse.

Elliot will be laid to rest in West Amboy Cemetery, Williamstown.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Palmarito Sea Turtle Rescue Project, PO Box 892, East Falmouth, MA 02536.
