Everett R. “Smiley” Burchell, 86, of Fairmount, passed away Thursday after a long illness.
Born in Wallkill to the late Robert R. and Eula Mosher Burchell, Everett grew up in Chardon, Ohio, where he graduated from high school. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy as a gunner’s mate from 1957 to 1961 before beginning a long and dedicated career with New Process Gear, where he worked for 38 years until retiring in 2002.
Everett lived a full and joyful life surrounded by the people and activities he loved most. He enjoyed snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, camping, boating, running, and cheering on the Syracuse University basketball team. A passionate collector of pins and coins, he also found happiness in time spent with family and friends.
One of Everett’s greatest joys was traveling with his wife and grandchildren. Together they created lasting memories on trips to New York City, Cape Cod, Niagara Falls, and many other special places.
Above all, Everett was proudest of his roles as husband, dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa. His love, humor, and warmth will be forever remembered by those whose lives he touched.
Everett was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Robert and Herbert; parents-in-law, Melbourne and Viola Raymond; brother-in-law, Donald Hausner; and sisters-in-law, Kathleen Raymond and Brenda Burchell.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Kathleen; daughter, Michele (Michael) Santa Barbara of Memphis; son, Keith (Karen) of Camillus; grandchildren, Dr. Alessandra (Patrick) Goodfellow of Phoenix, AZ, Kelly (Joseph) Curro of Camillus, Jeremy (Nicole) Santa Barbara of Memphis, and Kevin (Chey) Burchell of Sultan, WA; great-grandchildren, Natalya Goodfellow, Lilyanna Curro, Joey Curro, Giavanna Santa Barbara, Chandler Burchell, Sofia Santa Barbara, and Kwynn Burchell; sisters-in-law, Shirley Hausner, June Raymond, and Nancy Burchell; brothers-in-law, Ronald Raymond and Allen Raymond; and many nieces and nephews.
