Frank Walter, 79, of Syracuse, passed away on Thursday at Auburn Community Hospital.
Born in Passaic, NJ, Frank spent his formative years in White Plains, graduating from White Plains High School. He went on to earn his undergraduate degree from Ithaca College and later completed his master’s degree at Syracuse University. In 1969, he made Syracuse his home, where he would leave a lasting impact over the next five decades.
During his youth, Frank earned the rank of Eagle Scout, a distinction that reflected his early dedication to leadership and service. He spent several summers working at scout camps, where he served as a counselor and later as the waterfront director—experiences that helped shape his lifelong love of the outdoors and working with young people.
Frank dedicated more than 30 years of his life to teaching mathematics in the Syracuse City School District, retiring in 2002. He shared his passion for learning and inspired countless students throughout his career. Beyond the classroom, Frank was a coach who shaped young lives through sports-coaching basketball at Lincoln Middle School, and basketball, baseball, and track at Henninger High School.
Frank’s commitment to community service was steadfast. He was a longtime member and treasurer of Christ Community United Methodist Church and also served as treasurer of the Lakeside Fire Department, where he was a dedicated member.
Frank’s adventurous spirit led him to the water, where he found joy as a scuba diver for over 50 years. He also shared that passion as a scuba instructor with National Aquatics. In the colder months, he was often found on the slopes, indulging his love of skiing.
Above all, Frank cherished time with his family. His warmth, generosity, and steady presence were the cornerstone of many cherished memories.
Frank will be deeply missed by all who knew him—for his wisdom, his service, and the quiet strength with which he lived his life.
Frank was predeceased by his brother, Edward, in 2024.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Barbara; daughters, Kathy (Slade) Kosova of Albany and Carol Walter of Seattle, WA; son, Jim (Tara) Walter of Florence, AZ; grandchildren, Chris, Jason, Clare, Enver, Francesca, Caelus and one on the way; and several nieces and nephews.
To celebrate Frank’s life, relatives and friends are invited to gather on Saturday, July 12, 2025, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Christ Community United Methodist Church, 3474 Stiles Rd., Syracuse.
A memorial service will follow in the church.
