George E. Betts III, 86, of Camillus, passed away at Crouse Hospital on Wednesday.
Born on June 25, 1939, in Syracuse, George was the son of the late George E. Betts Jr. and Hermine (Tryon) Duerr and the stepson of the late Jim Duerr. He graduated from Solvay High School and attended the Manlius Military Academy before beginning his entrepreneurial career as a convenience store owner, first in Midtown Plaza and later in Solvay. In 1985, George opened Froggers Restaurant in Camillus Plaza, followed by Froggers Pizza & Deli in both Marcellus and Camillus.
George had a zest for life and enjoyed singing, playing the piano, and traveling, spending cherished winters with his beloved wife, Bette, in Fort Myers, FL. Known for his quick wit, dry humor, and mischievous spirit, he had an unforgettable presence. While he enjoyed the thrill of being a bookie, George’s greatest joys were the simpler times spent with family and supporting causes benefiting animals and children. He gave generously to many charities, always guided by his kind and generous heart.
George will be remembered for his humor and his unwavering love for his family.
George was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Bette (Ross) Betts, a grandson; and sister, Carol Betts.
Surviving are his children, Michael (Tammy) of Sun City Center, FL, Louis (Ann) of Westvale, George E. IV of Parrish, FL; and Lisa (Robert) Besner of Camillus; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews including his special niece, Franny (Frank) DeStefano of Geddes.
There will be no calling hours.
A funeral service will be celebrated on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, 5600 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
George will be laid to rest in Greenlawn Cemetery, Warners.
