Gerald "Jerry" Bassett, 88, of Camillus, passed away peacefully on Tuesday at Bishop Rehabilitation & Nursing Center. Born in the tight-knit community of Cadyville, Jerry's journey through life led him from the picturesque landscapes of Saranac Lake to his cherished home in the Syracuse area, where he put down roots in 1971.
A proud graduate of Saranac Lake High School, Jerry also wore the badge of a U.S. Army veteran with honor. For over six remarkable decades, he contributed his skills and dedication as a crane operator for the Operating Engineers Local 545. His commitment to his craft made him a respected and integral part of the team.
Jerry's faith was steadfast, as he was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church and a devoted member of the Jeepster Club. Throughout his illustrious career, he remained an active and dedicated lifelong member of the Operating Engineers Local 545, leaving an indelible mark on the profession he loved.
Beyond the cranes and steel, Jerry's heart belonged to his family. He found immense joy in the company of his grandchildren, and the love he shared with them was evident in every smile and shared moment.
Jerry was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth, in 2000; son, Victor Wenner; parents; sisters, Jean and Betty; and brother, Frank.
Surviving are his son, Thomas (Lorraine) Reddinger of Baldwinsville; sisters, Rita of Saratoga Springs, Alice of Sandusky, OH, and Nellie of Newark, OH; brother, Dr. John of Tennessee; grandchildren, Lisa, Ted, Craig, Scott, Meghan and Michelle; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
To celebrate Jerry's life, relatives and friends are invited to gather on Tuesday, December 12, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. A funeral Mass will follow at 11:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, 5600 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
Jerry will be laid to rest in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, Clay.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jerry’s memory may be made to one’s favorite charity, a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to the service of others.
