Huyland M. "Hy" Bryant

March 25, 1947 — August 3, 2025

Marcellus

Huyland M. “Hy” Bryant, 78, of Marcellus, passed away peacefully at Upstate University Hospital on Sunday.

Born and raised in Schenectady, Hy was a proud graduate of Linton High School. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Springfield College in Massachusetts, where he played volleyball, and later received a master’s degree from SUNY Cortland. His lifelong passion for education and athletics led to a 37-year career as a professor and coach at Onondaga Community College, where he retired in 2008.

Hy was a beloved volleyball coach and mentor throughout Central New York. He began coaching the OCC Women’s Volleyball Team in 1984, served as the varsity girls’ volleyball coach at Marcellus High School, and co-founded the Onondaga Volleyball Club, where he also coached for many years. His dedication to the sport and his athletes left a lasting impact on generations of players.

Beyond the court and classroom, Hy enjoyed flower gardening and spending time at camp. He will be remembered for his passion, leadership, and the countless lives he touched through teaching and coaching.

Most of all, Hy cherished time with his family—whether gathered around the dinner table, celebrating milestones, or simply sharing everyday moments, those connections were at the heart of his life.

Hy was predeceased by his daughter, Cara Bryant, in 2002; granddaughter, Alana Bryant, in 2008; and parents, Ruth and Huyland Bryant.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Mary; son, Huyland (Julie) of Skaneateles; daughter, Kayla (Stephen) Bryant-Lewis; grandchildren, Huyland Logan, Malaya Rose, and Myles Landric; sister, Christine (David) Dussault of Schenectady; sisters-in-law, Deborah (Zeke) Leal of Syracuse and Cathy Leal of Henrietta; and several nieces, nephews, and special friends.

To celebrate Hy’s life, relatives and friends are invited to gather on Friday, August 8, 2025, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 9, 2025, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Hy will be laid to rest in Highland Cemetery, Marcellus.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the SUNY Onondaga Community College Women’s Volleyball Program, 4585 W. Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse, NY 13215, or to the Springfield College Women’s Volleyball Program, 263 Alden St., Springfield, MA 01109.
