James “Jay” Vales, 72, of Camillus, passed away on Tuesday, surrounded by the love of his family. A communicant of St. Joseph’s church, Jay was born in Pittsburgh and moved to Syracuse at a young age. He graduated from St. Anthony of Padua in 1973. He built a life on hard work, family, faith, and humor.
Jay was a merchandiser, and worked for several companies throughout his career, including McLane Northeast. He was known for his strong work ethic and reliability.
After marrying in 1983, Jay and Cindy moved to Camillus to raise a family. Nothing brought Jay more joy than being with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was always looking forward to the next family trip. At any given time you would find Jay watching old western shows, Fox News or a football game. He was an avid Steelers fan and recently traveled to Ireland to see them play. When a family text came through with “WE ARE,” we knew the response was “SU.” He leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty and laughter. His quick wit, good-natured humor, and dad jokes will be remembered for years to come.
Jay is predeceased by his parents, John and Nancy Vales; and brother, John Vales.
Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Cynthia Vales; daughters, Ashley (Justin) McLaren and Kelley (Matthew) Corbett; son, Timothy (Alyson) Vales; grandchildren, Carter, Benjamin, and Piper; sisters, Greg (Robin) Koes and Marge (Bill) Ellsworth; brother, Keith (Donna) Vales; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and mother-in-law, Rosemary Graham.
