Janice Irene (Cox) Lovell

Janice Irene (Cox) Lovell, 94, of Camillus, passed peacefully into the hands of our Lord on Sunday at home, surrounded by her loving family.

Janice has been reunited with her devoted husband of 64 years, Guy Phillip “Jake” Lovell, and leaves behind a deep commitment and unwavering dedication to her family and pets that will be cherished by all who knew her. She was a caring and nurturing wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many in Camillus and loved her family fiercely. She was always quick to make a new friend, and her warmth and openness made people feel welcome.

Janice was the last of a generation of the Cox family who had lived in Camillus since at least the 1840s and included her siblings, Neil (Delores), Lucille (Edward), George (Flo), Jean (Richard), Phyllis (Donald), her stepbrother, William Berra, and her sister-in-law, Lesline (Donald Elliott).

One of the joys of Janice’s early years was making memories at the family camps on the Oneida River. In her later years, she enjoyed having family, friends, and her pets, especially Tiger and Alfie, gathered at the family pool on a sunny day or at holiday gatherings. But her greatest joy was supporting her grandchildren at school events, musical performances, or sporting activities.

Through her perseverance, stubbornness, hard work, and dedication, Janice built a loving environment for her family and friends. Her work included employment at Camillus Elementary School, the Target store in Fairmount, and as a small business owner, which instilled a strong work ethic in her children and grandchildren.

Janice was predeceased by her mother, Gertrude, in 1933, when she was a year old; by her father, Earl, in 1949; her stepmother, Irene, in 1984; and siblings, Neil (Dolores) Cox, Phyllis (Donald) Wright, Jean (Richard) McCarthy, and Lucille (Edward) O’Hara.

Surviving are her children, Jill (Mark) Modafferi of Liverpool, Jay of Camillus, Joel of Kingston, John (Pam) of Jackson, MS, and Jeff of Albany; and others who all provided unconditional love and support for many years, including Debra, Zoe, Rylan, and Kate.

She was proudest of her grandchildren, Kate (Kyle), Brian (Tammy), Nate (Amber), Abbie (Pete), Addie, Tess, Julia, Justin (Lindsey), Jenny (Will), and Natalie; great-grandchildren Zosia and August; and numerous nieces and nephews who were always considered immediate family, including the O’Hara, McCarthy, Cox, and Elliott families.

Services will be private.

The Lovell family is eternally grateful to the nurses and fourth-floor staff of Upstate Community Hospital, the staff of Hospice of Central New York, the staff of Nascentia, and Judy, Lucy, Sissy, and Eileen O’Hara, who provided loving care and compassion during her final years.
