Joan "Cookie" Boyle

February 25, 1938 — March 1, 2026

Syracuse

Joan “Cookie” Boyle, 88, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully Sunday at Upstate Community Hospital. She was born in Worcester, MA, and from her earliest days showed strength and determination that would define her life.

Cookie attended Northfield Mount Hermon School and later earned her degree from Sargent College at Boston University. She began her career as a physical education teacher at North Syracuse Central School District, where she met the love of her life, her husband William, an English teacher. After starting their family, Cookie chose to step away from teaching to devote herself fully to raising her children, a role she embraced with joy and purpose.

In her early years in Massachusetts, Cookie spent time on Martha’s Vineyard, where she taught kayaking and sailing. Those summers fostered a lifelong love of the ocean, a passion she carried with her into later years as she and William spent many winters in Surfside, South Carolina, surrounded by dear friends and the comfort of the sea.

Cookie loved all sports and was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. That love of sports translated seamlessly into one of her most cherished roles — being her grandchildren’s most ardent and enthusiastic supporter. Whether on the sidelines, in the stands, or cheering from afar, you could always hear Cookie’s voice above the rest. She was endlessly proud of her grandchildren, celebrating not only their athletic accomplishments but who they were becoming as people. Her encouragement, pride, and unwavering support followed them both on and off the field.

Cookie was wonderfully creative and endlessly generous with her talents. She crocheted, knitted, embroidered, and sewed, making cherished blankets, hats, and every Halloween costume her children could imagine. She enjoyed cake decorating and was famous for baking holiday breads, which she lovingly delivered to friends, doctors, and dentists as a simple but meaningful way to express her gratitude and appreciation.

Life was not always easy for Cookie. She grew up facing significant obstacles, including the challenge of being raised without a family of her own. Rather than hardening her, these experiences shaped her into a woman of deep compassion, resilience, and strength. They taught her to face life’s challenges head-on and instilled in her a profound appreciation for family and friendship. Cookie cherished her loved ones fiercely and was known for her quick wit, sharp sense of humor, and the one-liners that could brighten any room.

Cookie was predeceased by her beloved husband, William.

Surviving are her daughter, Michelle (Chris Vieni) Baker of Tully; sons, Timothy (Karen) and Christopher, both of Syracuse; grandchildren, Justin (Victoria Dievendorf), Mackenzie (Joey) Lancellotti, Matthew, Maggie, Patrick, Hadley and Quinn Boyle; brother, Richard (Mary Jane) Cook of Yuba City, CA; as well as several nephews.

The family extends their deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to her devoted caregiver, Carolyn Kocher, who was by Cookie’s side every day for more than two years. Carolyn’s kindness, patience, and unwavering dedication ensured that Cookie’s days were filled with dignity, comfort, and companionship. The family cannot thank her enough for the love and care she provided.

The family would also like to sincerely thank the staff and aides at Brookdale Summerfield. Their compassion, attentiveness, and genuine care meant more than words can express. They helped make Cookie’s final years rich with love, laughter, music, and warmth, for which the family will always be grateful.

There will be no calling hours.
