John R. “Jack” Kelly, 97, of Skaneateles, passed away Tuesday at home. A lifetime resident of the Syracuse area, Jack was an Army veteran of WWII, and received the Silver Star Medal and Purple Heart. He was employed with the Syracuse City School District for 32 years. A communicant of St. Mary's of the Lake Church in Skaneateles, Jack enjoyed walking, biking and spending time with his family. He was a sports enthusiast and an avid Yankees fan, who had a quick wit and a great sense of humor.
Jack was predeceased by his wife, Mary “Rita” in 2018; son, John Michael in 2006; sisters, Kathleen Lynn in 2007 and Helene Hipkens in 2018; and son-in-law, Edgar Michalak in 2016.
Surviving are his daughters, Patricia Michalak of Camillus, Mary Anne (Christian Strohmenger) Kelly of Onondaga Hill, Kathleen (Jim) DeRito of Cross Lake and Theresa Kelly of Syracuse; sons, Daniel (Lisa Siskowski) of Camillus, Richard (Sara) of Elbridge and Dennis (Michelle) of Jordan; 14 grandchildren; one step-grandson; nine great-grandchildren and one on the way; five step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; brother, Jerry Kelly of Syracuse; and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Yolanda Fero and Hospice for the loving care and compassion they gave to Jack.
Relatives and friends may call Monday, September 19 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, September 20 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s of the Lake Church, 10 W. Austin St., Skaneateles. Jack will be laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetery, Skaneateles
