Margaret Esser Schnurr, 99, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully on Thursday, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Syracuse, Margaret was a graduate of Eastwood High School. She began her career working in the office for the Dean of Women at Syracuse University. Margaret later worked in various positions for American Airlines for over 25 years, retiring in 1989. Known for her professionalism, warmth, and dedication, she formed many lasting friendships throughout her career.
Margaret enjoyed a full and active life. She loved playing bridge, reading a good mystery book, and especially cherished her years as an avid golfer. Margaret was also known for her sense of style.
She will be remembered for her gracious spirit, sharp wit, and the kindness she shared with everyone she met.
Margaret was predeceased by her first husband, Thomas Smith; second husband, Robert Schnurr; son, David Smith; daughter-in-law, Jeannine Schnurr; and parents, Leon and Carlotta Esser.
Surviving are her daughter, Sheila (Neil Bonvell) Quinell of Camillus; son, Thomas (Terry Sanchez) Smith of Houston, TX; daughter-in-law, Kimberly Smith of Chicago, IL; stepson, Robert Schnurr of Auburn; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; niece, Carol (Frank) Davis of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.
Margaret’s family would like to thank the caregivers of The Syracuse Home at McHarrie Place, who became Margaret’s second family.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, December 3, 2025, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, December 4, 2025, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
Margaret will be laid to rest in White Chapel Memory Gardens Cemetery, DeWitt.
