Michael H. Church, 68, of Warners, passed away peacefully at the Samaritan Medical Center. A lifelong resident of the Syracuse area, Michael graduated from Marcellus High School before dedicating 35 years of distinguished service to the Syracuse Fire Department, where he retired with honor as District Chief. His leadership, courage, and commitment to the safety of others defined much of his life’s work.
Michael was a man of remarkable intellect and endless curiosity. A voracious reader and passionate history enthusiast, he could often be found with a book in hand, eager to learn something new or share a fascinating fact. He was also an avid golfer who cherished time on the greens with friends and family.
A devoted and faith-filled father, Michael’s greatest joy was his family. His warmth, guidance, and steady presence touched the lives of all who knew him. He exemplified compassion, integrity, and dedication in every aspect of his life.
Michael was a proud member of Mensa International and an active member of the Camillus Elks, where he was honored as Elk of the Year for 2017–2018. He cherished the friendships he made through these communities and the many opportunities they brought for fellowship and service. He also enjoyed traveling, embracing every chance to explore new places and experiences.
Michael’s impact on his family, friends, colleagues, and community will be felt for generations. He will be remembered for his sharp mind, generous spirit, and the deep love he shared with those fortunate enough to know him.
Michael is predeceased by his parents, Henry and Rita; brother, Vincent, and nephew, Brian Schneider.
Surviving are his daughters, Sarah and Hannah Church, both of Camillus; sisters, Marilyn (Tom) Schneider, Marguerite and Maureen Church, and Kathleen Oliver; brother, Peter (Carmen); and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services were private.
Michael will be laid to rest in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Marcellus.
