Michael Edward Kessler, 69, of Camillus, passed away Monday, peacefully at home after a year-long battle with cancer. He was a graduate of Most Holy Rosary High School and the Central New York Police Academy. Upon completing his education, he pursued his passion for justice by joining the Syracuse Police Department. In 1975, Mike's commitment to public service was recognized as he became the youngest among the 500 sworn-in officers. Throughout his career, he ascended to the rank of detective and was highly regarded for his exemplary service. His unwavering dedication earned him numerous commendations, including the prestigious Medal of Valor. Following his retirement in 2001, Mike embarked on a new chapter of his life, dedicating the next 15 years to Constellation Energy. An avid golfer, he was an SU football season ticket holder and a lifelong Red Sox fan. Additionally, he took immense pride in caring for his family and home, often seen meticulously manicuring his lawn or giving his car a sparkling shine.

Mike was predeceased by his father and stepmother, Warren and Janet Kessler; mother and stepfather, Eileen and Robert Vallee; brother, William; brother-in-law, David Maley; sister-in-law, Deborah Massey; and his beloved bulldog and only son, Earl Theodore Kessler.

Surviving are his wife, high school sweetheart and best friend of 51 years, the former Catherine Ennis; daughters, Kerrie (Sean) Coakley, Michelle Starowicz, and Katie (Chris) Becktoft; precious grandchildren, Jack and Brynn Coakley, Michael, Stella and Charlotte Starowicz, and Skylar Becktoft; grand dogs, Alex, Rosie, and Hudson; sisters, Cynthia Kessler Fairbank, Christine Vallee, and Bobbie (Daniel) Klein; and brother, Timothy (Carolyn) Vallee. He also leaves behind a big Irish family, several wonderful in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

Our family has been humbled by the outpouring of love and support over the past year from our lifelong friends, neighbors, and coworkers.  There are no words to express our gratitude.

We are at peace knowing Mike is reunited with his brother, Billy, whom he's missed dearly for 52 years and is up in Heaven sharing a cold one with his father-in-law, Bill, and Uncle John.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Mike’s life during a visitation on Monday, December 4 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
