Michael E. Smorol, 75, of Syracuse, passed away Friday, surrounded by his loving family. He was raised on Tipperary Hill by his parents, Edward J. Smorol and the former Sophia A. Kasiak. Michael attended Sacred Heart School and graduated with a BSME from Syracuse University and an MBA from the University of Rochester.
Mike’s dream as a young man was to see the world. He enjoyed traveling to various places just to check them out. These family vacations were always, “We’ll just wing it” road trips with no hotel reservations - pick a compass direction and end up in Boston, Freeport, Maine, Toronto, or Montreal. Family vacations were to Orlando and Myrtle Beach, as well as Mt. Rushmore, Sturgis, South Dakota, the Grand Canyon; Yellowstone, Phoenix and driving the PCH from San Diego to LA.
Mike worked in the HVAC industry for 45 years, at Carrier, Trane and Intertek in various Engineering, Operations and General Management positions worldwide. He was also the proud holder of eight U.S. patents. His career allowed him to continue seeing the world, including Asia, Europe, Australia, South America, and Africa - from riding the “bullet train” from Tokyo to Osaka/Nagoya, or an elephant in Chang Mei, Thailand, to a camel at the Great Pyramids in Egypt. He enjoyed driving from Brussels to Auschwitz, Poland, Melbourne to Sydney, Australia, and from Normandy Beach through the Chunnel to London and Edinburg, as well as driving a rental car in downtown San Paulo, Brazil to continue his adventures. His work assignments had him living in Hong Kong, China, Brussels, Belgium and Montreal, Canada, as well as Fort Smith, Arkansas and Lexington, Kentucky. Most of all, Mike loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren whom he loved and cherished. He would often be found attending school functions, sitting on the deck, swimming in the pool, and sharing stories from all of his trips.
Michael is survived by his wife of 51 years, the former Gail A. Krasnewich; sons, Brian (Emily), David (Kristen), Thomas (Amber), and Mark; and grandchildren, Anna, Christopher, Sophie and Michael.
To celebrate Michael’s life, relatives and friends are invited to gather on Thursday, October 8, 2026, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 9, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, 927 Park Ave., Syracuse.
Michael will be laid to rest in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Lakeland.
