Paul Edward Duda, Esq. 80, of Westvale, passed away on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at 11:44 a.m. Born in Syracuse, New York, on September 12, 1945 to Paul P and Mary Pitoniak Duda, Paul was a lifelong resident of the Syracuse area and a proud member of the community he called home.
Paul was defined by intelligence, wit, and deep loyalty to those he loved. He is survived by his beloved wife, Katherine, and three children, Michael Duda, Lynne Richer, and Matthew Duda via his marriage to his first wife, Colleen O’Connor Hedges, and other beloved family across Syracuse and Florida.
A graduate of Christian Brothers Academy, Class of 1963, Paul went on to attend Le Moyne College, earning his degree in 1967. He continued his education at Syracuse University College of Law, graduating in 1970.
Paul built a distinguished career as an attorney with the Child Protective and Adult Protective divisions of the Onondaga County Department of Social Services for over 20 years. Through his work, he demonstrated a steadfast commitment to serving the county and took a great deal of pride in his trial success rate.
An avid reader with a formidable intellect, Paul could often be found immersed in a book, always eager to discuss history, politics, random sports trivia or current events. His quick mind was matched only by his love of humor. Known for cracking many (often bad) jokes, Paul delighted in making others smile, never passing up an opportunity for a pun or playful remark.
Sports were another great passion in Paul’s life, especially Syracuse men’s basketball. A loyal, long-time season ticket holder during both the Manley Field House and Carrier Dome years, he made sure his children were baptized into an irrational love for the Orange on day one. He brought this enthusiasm and his strong opinions to colleagues, extended family, and anyone standing in line at Morey’s Mill on a Friday night. And in case there was ever any doubt about his basketball expertise, it was validated when he coached the St. Ann’s School Purple Eagles to the 1978 CYO JV Championship.
Paul also had a special place in his heart for his dogs (Hansel and Gretel). His affection for them was constant and wholehearted, and they were members of the family. Paul found great comfort and joy in their presence.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home.
In honoring Paul’s life, his family requests that in lieu of flowers, you remember him with a smile and consider a donation to HumaneCNY at www.humanecny.org to help animals find a loving home.
