Richard "Dick" E. Hamann

February 14, 1926 — August 31, 2019

Richard “Dick” E. Hamann, 93, of Geneseo, formerly of Camillus, died on August 31, 2019. Dick was a man of purpose, principle and integrity. He was a good father and neighbor, who loved to putter around the house and yard, refinish furniture and fix anything in need of repair.

Dick was born on February 14, 1926 in Dunkirk, NY to Edward and Ricke Hamann and was their only child. He was proud to be an Eagle Scout and joined the Navy directly out of high school in 1943. He completed officers` training and served on LCI (L)s in the Philippines and East China Sea, leaving the service as a lieutenant (J. G.). He earned his bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University in 1950.

Dick worked for the Coca-Cola Co. and Sylvania/GTE Products Corp. in Boston, Chicago and Camillus. He retired from GTE Sylvania in 1989 as director of credit and collections after 30 years of service.

After returning to Camillus in 1974, Dick enjoyed many volunteer activities including driving for Meals-On-Wheels, teaching ESL for Literacy Volunteers, driving for CATFISH and working many hours at the Camillus Erie Canal Park. He was a longtime member of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Camillus, where he was active on the council and many committees throughout his life. He was a 50-year member of the Camillus and Marcellus Masonic Lodges and a 32nd Degree Mason. He moved to Geneseo in 2015.

Mr. Hamann was predeceased by his beloved wife of 58 years, Eileen, in 2010.

He was the loving father of Carla (Bill) Hoenigmann of Park Ridge, NJ, Marlene (Tom) Hamann-Whitmore of Geneseo, NY and Bruce (Natalie) of Cardiff, CA and proud grandfather of Sarah, Stacy, Ben, Alex, Nora and Cooper.

Besides his family, Mr. Hamann loved, in no particular order; smoking his daily cigars, reading outside in the sun, working on the Erie Canal, watching any SU game, homemade mashed potatoes and good pie.
