Russell W. Shedd, 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He leaves behind a lifetime of love, service, dedication, and cherished memories shared with his family and friends.

Russ was born and raised in Rutland, Vermont. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy, which laid the foundation for his distinguished 39-year career with the Federal Aviation Administration.

Russ took great pride in caring for his home of 46 years, where he loved to entertain and his family enjoyed many traditions, holidays, and special celebrations.

Russ’s love of sports was another important part of his life. He is famously remembered as a pitcher on the “Miracle of 1955” Vermont state championship team, pitching a double header victory immediately following his nine-inning no-hitter. He was a devoted fan of his New York teams, including the Yankees, Giants, and Rangers. Russ spent many years golfing at Tuscarora Golf Club and playing tennis at Pine Grove Country Club.

In his later years, Russ enjoyed extensive travel with his cherished companion of 15 years, Sharon Petty. The two of them didn’t miss a beat, they filled their social calendars with trips, concerts, shows, and restaurants.

Above all, family was central to Russ’s life. He is survived by his daughters, Ann-Marie (Ed) Gilroy and Jennifer (Kurt) Birchler; his companion, Sharon Petty; grandchildren, Jim (Tiff), Sean, Jessica (Justin), and Jack; great-grandchildren, Olivia and Hudson; and brother, John Shedd.

Russ was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joanne, in 2010; and son, Timothy, in 2024.

Russ will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His years of service, devotion to his home and family, love of sports, and the memories he created will remain a lasting part of his legacy.

To celebrate Russell’s life, relatives and friends are invited to gather on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.

Russell will be laid to rest at the Onondaga County Veterans Cemetery, Syracuse.
