Sophia M. Mykolajewycz

October 16, 1934 — November 29, 2023

Sophia M. Mykolajewycz, 89, of Syracuse, passed away on Wednesday at The Centers at St. Camillus. Born in Zhovkva, Ukraine, she made the journey to the United States in 1949 with her mother, seeking a new life full of promise.

A proud graduate of Blodgett Vocational High School, Sophia embarked on a diverse career, working at establishments such as A&P and Byrne Dairy. She dedicated many years of her life as a comptometer operator at Crucible Steel, retiring after 13 years of dedicated service.

Sophia’s faith was a cornerstone of her life as she was a devoted communicant of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church. She played an active role in the church community, serving as a member of the Apostleship of Prayer, where she held the esteemed positions of past president and Mother of the Year. Her commitment was further demonstrated through her years of volunteer service in the church office, where she served as a secretary.

Beyond Sophia’s professional and religious commitments, she found joy and fulfillment in various creative pursuits. She had a passion for baking, and her skillful hands were equally adept at embroidery, knitting, crocheting, and cross stitch.

Above all, Sophia cherished the moments spent with her family especially the holidays and Sunday dinners. Her love and warmth created a home filled with lasting memories. Despite facing challenges, her strength and resilience were unwavering.

Sophia was predeceased by her loving husband, Iwan, in 2004; daughter, Irene Galvin, in 1979; father, Jan Schmidt, in 1973; and mother, Maria Schmidt, in 1995.

Surviving are her daughter, Helen Aragoni of Moss Beach, CA; son, Mark (Michele) Mykol of Florissant, CO, and son-in-law, Rev. Dc. Edward (Debbie) Galvin of Syracuse; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Sophia’s family would like to thank the D-Unit at The Centers at St. Camillus for their loving care and compassion.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Sophia's life during a visitation Sunday, December 3, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Buranich Funeral Home, 5431 W. Genesee St., Camillus.
