Obituary for Janet A. Shope

Janet A. Shope, 81, of Camillus, passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at University Hospital. Born in London, she moved to the United States in 1961. Janet was a member of the Syracuse Cinephile Society, Bellevue Country Club, Corinthian Club of Syracuse, English Speaking Union, Spirit of Syracuse Chorus, Liverpool Community Chorus and Crouse Hospital Auxiliary Board. She was active with her sons’ school in the PTA and taught Sunday school at Bellevue Heights UMC. Janet enjoyed socializing and gathering with her Camelot Community, meeting with friends in her local book club, knitting hats for newborns, gardening, reading and spending time with family.

Janet was predeceased by her husband, James, in 2014; and nephew, Stephen Oliver.

Surviving are her sons, John (Tina Dell'Orefice) of West Chester, PA, Stephen (Marjorie Heesemann) of Camillus and James (Michelle) of Camillus; brother, John (Alexandra) Oliver of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; grandson, Brendon; granddaughters, Gwen and Sarah; and many nieces and nephews.

As per Janet’s wishes, friends are invited to join the family at Bellevue Country Club, 1902 Glenwood Ave., Syracuse to share a celebration of her life on Sunday, June 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial will be private in Greenlawn Cemetery, Warners.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to ECHO Meals on Wheels, 4600 W. Genesee St., Syracuse, NY 13219.
